Maryland's 'Thrive Academy' Recognized for Rehabilitating Youths Impacted by Gun Violence 2024-10-03

Maryland's 'Thrive Academy' program, launched a year ago by the Department of Juvenile Services, is being recognized for its work in rehabilitating and supporting at-risk youths affected by the increasing prevalence of gun violence in the state. The program pairs troubled teens, offenders and victims with resources like housing, jobs, food, and physical and mental health plans, as well as provides them with mentors called 'credible messengers' who have personal experience with the challenges these youths face. Since its inception, 126 teenagers have participated in Thrive Academy, with 23 of them being arrested for weapons possession and 2 being shot in the year since. The program aims to interrupt the cycle of violence and prevent future gun crimes by giving these youths the support and guidance they need to get on a different path.
