My dear Randolph, Can you imagine what 700 kms represents? Well, it’s the distance between Boston and Washington or between London and Basel in Switzerland. Why am I speaking about this today? Quite simply because a new worldwide record has just been registered; that of the longest flash of lightning of all times ever recorded. This flash of lightning measured 709 kms precisely, beating the previous record by 388 kms held by the State of Oklahoma since 2007. It’s therefore this mega flash that not long ago crossed the sky in Brazil that has become the longest in existence. These types of mega-flashes are today well known, they are electric discharges of tremendous intensity and on a vast scale at altitudes from 2 to 2000 kms that can therefore attain lengths of several hundred kilometers. Such phenomena happen mostly in the Plains in North America and in the delta of La Plata in South America. They come from the propagation of channels of lightning that use the enormous reservoir of positive charges in contact with the stratus. Forming at an altitude of 8 to 10 kilometers, the lightning moves backwards, then downwards following the trajectory of the positively charged ice crystals. For information, the discharge that made Brazil the new record holder of the world lit up a zone of over 80.000 km2, at the speed of 300 000 km/second. Can you imagine! I want to share with you another piece of information, just as captivating on this theme. I don’t know about you, but I always have the impression of being a little child facing these spectacular events of nature. I’m waiting impatiently for you on the other side of this link. You’ll be stunned, I assure you. See you soon. Esmeralda, A friend you can count on. |
