vandalism String of vandalism in Federal Hill 2025-07-15 Calls for accountability and a stronger public safety response are growing in Baltimore's Federal Hill after a weekend wave of vandalism left dozens of residents and several businesses dealing with costly property damage. Jen Covino, the Public Safety Chair of the Federal Hill Neighborhood Association, said at least 55 vehicles and three businesses were damaged. Video shows the front glass door of the Federal Hill Cleaners on Charles Street being shattered on Sunday morning. The owner, Han Kim, said the teen vandals were likely trying to steal small items like water, gum or quarters. Covino said the vandalism has added stress to residents' daily lives by way of unexpected costs to replace the damaged property. murder MS-13 Members Charged in 3 Baltimore Killings 2025-07-15 A new federal indictment charges that the 2023 killing of 17-year-old Carlos Ivan Oseguera Funez in Baltimore was carried out by MS-13 gang members who posed as a girl he was meeting and lured him to his death because they believed he had ties to a rival gang. The indictment also charges the MS-13 members with the March 2024 killing of 19-year-old Michael Ariel Chacon Nataren and the April 2024 killing of 38-year-old Jose Castron Merales. Oseguera Funez was remembered as an enthusiastic student and volunteer who dreamed of being in the military or a police officer, but was targeted by MS-13 due to apparent ties to the 18th Street Gang. The federal charges provide details on how the gang members used social media and encrypted messaging to plan and carry out the killings. crime Baltimore Leaders Tout Crime Reductions, Warn of Federal Funding Threats 2025-07-15 Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, joined by several of Maryland's congressional representatives, held a press briefing at Baltimore City Hall to discuss the city's progress in public safety, the impact of federal funding cuts, and the strengthening partnership between city and federal leaders. Scott highlighted a 23.6% drop in homicides and 23.4% drop in non-fatal shootings in the first five months of 2025, as well as declines in other crimes like auto thefts and carjackings. The federal delegation praised Scott's community-based approach to addressing violence. However, they warned that proposed Medicaid and other program cuts by the Trump administration could undermine the city's progress in areas like addiction treatment and overdose prevention. |
