On June 29, 2012, the intense storm with high winds and heavy downpours knocked out power for more than eight days in Maryland, with 9,200 power lines toppling during the event. The derecho caused about $19 million worth of damage in the area and resulted in three deaths in Maryland. Then-President Barack Obama declared a major disaster for Maryland, and Gov. Martin O'Malley declared a state of emergency. Meteorologists say a derecho is an unusually strong and long-lasting thunderstorm straight-line wind event that can travel hundreds of miles and produce wind gusts over 100 mph. hit-and-run Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash on I-95 in Maryland 2025-06-29 A 33-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 95 north of Baltimore early Sunday, according to Maryland State Police.
