murder Fugitive from El Salvador convicted in 2023 slaying of Maryland woman 2025-04-15 Victor Martinez-Hernandez, 24, was convicted of first-degree murder, first-degree rape, third-degree sex offense and kidnapping in the 2023 slaying of Rachel Morin, a 37-year-old Maryland mother of five. Morin was attacked while exercising on a popular hiking trail northeast of Baltimore. Prosecutors alleged Martinez-Hernandez, a fugitive from El Salvador, carried out a planned attack, grabbing Morin off the trail, bashing her head against nearby rocks, raping her and concealing her body in a drainage culvert. The case became a political flashpoint during the 2024 presidential election as former President Donald Trump blamed the Biden administration for failing to properly secure the border. Martinez-Hernandez was arrested last summer in Oklahoma and his DNA was found at the crime scene. sexual assault Retired Baltimore cop gets life sentence for sexually assaulting girl at day care 2025-04-14 James Stanley Weems Jr., a retired Baltimore cop, was given a life sentence after being convicted of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl at his ex-wife's day care center. Prosecutors accused Weems of grooming the girl, using snacks and special privileges as the day care's van driver to build a relationship with her, which he then used to show her pornography and sexually assault her. Weems, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Maryland Army National Guard and Baltimore Police Department, denied the allegations but was convicted on all counts related to the 10-year-old victim. He still faces additional charges related to three other alleged victims. shooting 16-year-old killed in shooting behind Baltimore County apartment complex 2025-04-14 A 16-year-old was killed in a shooting behind an apartment complex in Arbutus, Baltimore County, on Sunday afternoon. Officers responded to the 4000 block of Alan Drive, where they found the teen with at least one gunshot wound. He died at the scene. Authorities are searching for five male suspects in their 20s who were seen fleeing the area. The shooting comes amid concerns over youth gun violence in Baltimore County, with an 18-year-old recently arrested for the 2024 murder of a 17-year-old in Reisterstown. A county police officer was also injured in a shooting in Catonsville in March 2025. |
