Officers' Actions Justified in 2024 Deadly Shooting, Maryland AG Says 2025-03-04

The Maryland Attorney General's Office has determined that the actions of officers involved in a 2024 deadly shooting in West Baltimore were justified. On October 9, 2024, an officer attempted to stop a driver, Robert Nedd Jr., who fled on foot. When police caught up to Nedd, he brandished a gun, and officers fired shots, killing him. Investigators recovered a loaded handgun near the scene. The OAG said it will not prosecute the officers involved, as they did not commit a crime under Maryland law.

Baltimore Woman Sentenced to 15 Years for Running Sex Trafficking Ring 2025-03-03

A Baltimore woman named Kenika Danielle Leach has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for running a sex trafficking ring that operated across Maryland. Leach exploited women by providing them drugs and then insisting they repay the 'drug debts' by engaging in commercial sex acts. She also used physical violence to control and coerce the women. The investigation that led to Leach's conviction began in 2021 when a patient told hospital staff that Leach had sex trafficked her. Prosecutors and law enforcement agencies worked together to identify 10 additional victims and dismantle the trafficking operation.

Minors in Maryland Adult Jails Face Harsh Conditions, Violations of Federal Standards 2025-03-03

Minors in adult jails across Maryland often spend up to 23 hours a day in isolation, go without schooling, and in some cases avoid showering for fear of being raped. Maryland law requires minors as young as 14 to be charged as adults for certain crimes, and most go to an adult jail when they are arrested. The federal government has characterized Maryland as an 'outlier' and removed it from a national analysis assessing compliance with standards to protect youth. Lawmakers are considering a measure to prohibit minors from being held in adult jails, except in limited circumstances.
