Report Exposes Stark Racial Disparities in Maryland's Criminal Justice System 2025-03-13

A report by the Maryland Equitable Justice Collaborative has revealed stark racial disparities in Maryland's criminal justice system. Black people make up 30% of the state's population but account for 51% of adult arrests, 59% of jail detainees, 71% of prisoners, 71% of parolees, and 53% of those under supervised probation. The collaborative, led by the Maryland Office of the Attorney General and the Office of the Public Defender, outlined 18 recommendations to address issues like racial profiling, housing discrimination, and the 'school-to-prison pipeline.' While the report faces potential challenges from the federal government and state budget constraints, the Attorney General vowed to implement the reforms despite the 'assault' from the Trump administration on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
