Marylanders among recipients of racially offensive text messages under investigation by FBI 2024-11-08Maryland's attorney general is turning his attention to racist text messages invoking slavery that were received by Black residents. The offensive language references picking cotton at the nearest plantation. Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown told 11 News that the text messages appear to be part of a nationwide campaign targeting Black people. The messages landed on phones the day after Tuesday's election, and those receiving them include school-aged children and college students. A woman who asked to remain anonymous told 11 News that her family and friends received racist text messages, saying 'I was shocked, I was scared, I was nervous, I was upset.' The FBI is aware of the offensive racist text messages sent to individuals around the country and is in contact with the Justice Department and other federal authorities on the matter. Brown said it's critical that people who receive these texts report it to local law enforcement and to the Maryland Attorney General's Civil Rights Division. |
