Maryland Implements Controversial Juvenile Justice Reforms 2024-11-02Controversial changes to Maryland's new juvenile justice reform law took effect on Friday. The new law allows children between the ages of 10 to 12 to be charged with illegal gun possession, auto theft, animal cruelty, and sexual offense in the third degree. It also allows the state's attorney's office to review cases against young people who are under the Department of Juvenile Services' supervision. The changes are intended to address increasing instances of juvenile crime and provide comprehensive rehabilitative support for justice-involved youth.
