Maryland Governor Orders Review of Student Criminal History Sharing After Surge in Youth Crime 2024-10-26Amid a surge in youth crime, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore authorized immediate action for the Department of Juvenile Services to lead a review of information sharing when a student charged with or convicted of a violent crime attends a public school. The push for a review comes after the Maryland State Board of Education approved emergency rules requiring superintendents to share information about students' criminal records, specifically regarding reportable offenses. The review will in part inform the work of the newly formed Commission on Juvenile Justice Reform and Emerging Best Practices. Maryland Governor Orders Review of Student Criminal History Sharing 2024-10-25Maryland's governor is getting involved after the state school board mandated how students' criminal history is shared. Gov. Wes Moore ordered the Department of Juvenile Services to lead an interagency review of how information about Maryland public school students who have been charged with or convicted of violent crimes is shared. The state board decided that superintendents must be notified if new students have committed serious crimes while attending their previous Maryland schools. The rule change comes after a Howard High School student with a prior criminal record was charged with first-degree murder. The ongoing review will inform the work of the Commission on Juvenile Justice Reform and Emerging Best Practices, a statewide commission to review and report on juvenile services, facilities and programs in Maryland.
