Maryland Establishes Correctional Ombudsman Office 2024-09-23Gov. Wes Moore took executive action to formalize the state's first Office of Correctional Ombudsman, an independent and impartial oversight entity that will conduct investigations and review to ensure the integrity of operations within the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services and the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. Yvonne Briley-Wilson was appointed as the acting correctional ombudsman, with the power to refer criminal charges if any investigation finds illegal activity inside the state's criminal justice system. The new office comes as the administration has dealt with several high-profile controversies in both adult and juvenile detention systems. Deadly Shooting in Federal Hill Alleyway 2024-09-23Baltimore Police are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred in the 1100 block of Marshall Street early Saturday morning. Christian Leight, 24, was found suffering from gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Police have released security footage showing a fight breaking out just before the shooting and are asking the public to help identify two individuals who may be connected to the incident. Residents in the area believe it is generally safe but emphasize the need for vigilance and awareness of one's surroundings. Multiple School Threats Investigated in Anne Arundel County 2024-09-23Anne Arundel County Police have investigated 22 threats affecting roughly five schools since September 16th.
