On-and-off Rain Showers to Start the Workweek in Maryland 2024-09-30The workweek in Maryland will start with on-and-off rain showers. Expect mist, drizzle, and scattered showers on Monday and Tuesday, with highs mainly in the upper 60s to near 70°. Showers will become more numerous on Monday afternoon, and the greatest chance of widespread showers and pockets of steady rain will be on Tuesday. A cold front will approach on Wednesday, but showers are expected to be less widespread than on the previous two days. The gloomy weather will finally break on Thursday, with a gorgeous stretch of sunny and warmer weather expected through next Saturday. Underground Fire Disrupts Downtown Baltimore 2024-09-29An underground fire in downtown Baltimore left thousands without power, closed roads and businesses, damaged a bookstore, and injured a firefighter. The fire was the third underground fire within a couple of blocks of North Charles Street this year. BGE crews are assessing the fire's impact on underground electric infrastructure to carry out necessary repairs. The 300 block of North Charles Street is no stranger to underground fires, with similar incidents occurring in late January and June. Baltimore's Community-Driven Approach to Reducing Violent Crime 2024-09-29Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, who previously frequented a barbershop near a notorious drug-dealing intersection, has led a crackdown on an alleged drug trafficking organization that plagued the neighborhood and drove violence citywide. The mayor's office's Group Violence Reduction Strategy effort, which involves collaboration between law enforcement, social services, and community members, has helped drive a 21% annual decline in homicides last year and a 34% drop so far this year. Similar community-centered anti-violence strategies are also taking shape in cities like Detroit and San Antonio, with varying degrees of success and community buy-in. |
