My dear Randolph,

This year, Holy Week will begin today Sunday April 10, Palm Sunday and will end on April 17 on Easter Sunday.

Palm Sunday is the Christian celebration that commemorates the entrance of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem, acclaimed as the son of God. This day marks the end of Lent and the beginning of the Holy Week during which are celebrated the passion, the crucifixion, the death and the resurrection of Christ. That’s why this day is also called Passion Sunday.

Why do we celebrate Palm Sunday?

Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey and was acclaimed as a King by his disciples who placed coats, olive branches and palm tree branches on his path. The crowd cried out "Blessed be the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna to the highest in the heavens!

That's why these two important moments are commemorated during the Last Supper on Palm Sunday:

  • The first is the procession of palms and their blessing by the priest.
  • The second is the reading that evokes the Passion of the Lord according to the Gospel of Saint Mathew.

The liturgical color of Palm Sunday is red, reminding us of the Passion of the Lord.

On Palm Sunday, the Christians recognize Jesus as the fundamental pillar of their life, just like the inhabitants of Jerusalem when they received and acclaimed him as the prophet, the Son of God and King.

According to the Christian faith, the branches of the palm tree are the sign of rebirth of the faith in God, in life and in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The blessing of the branches takes place before the procession. It’s habit that the believers keep the blessed branches of palm in their home. These bouquets are the symbol of the victory of Christ over death.

What do these branches symbolize?

This day is called Palm Sunday precisely because Jesus received many bouquets from his disciples and humble people.

The branches of olive and of palm trees are the sign par excellence of the rebirth of the faith in God. They are considered as the symbol of the life and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. They also remind the faith of the Church in Christ and his proclamation as being the King of the Heavens and the Earth. During this period, it’s customary that people keep the blessed branches at home. Many make crosses with them and place them behind doors, on a crucifix or again, on sacred images and religious paintings.

In geographical zones where there are no palm trees or where they are considered at risk of extinction, they are replaced by branches from the olive tree, the elder tree, the fir tree or other types of trees.

The Jewish people in particular considered the palm tree as a symbol of fertility and of wealth.

The unused blessed branches are burnt and their ashes are used during the celebration of Ash Wednesday.

Randolph, I’ll be back to you in a few days to announce extraordinary news to you.

In the meantime, I’m sending you all my affection.

Esmeralda,

Your friend and medium
