In reality they were compromised -- along with the rest of Abdulaziz's phone, which had allegedly been infected by Pegasus, a powerful piece of malware designed to spy on its users. Abdulaziz, as CNN reported last month, is suing the creators of Pegasus, Israel-based cyber company NSO Group, accusing them of violating international law by selling the software to oppressive regimes. NSO has denied any involvement in the death of Khashoggi, insisting its software is "only for use fighting terrorism and crime." The company was condemned as "the worst of the worst" by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden during a video conference with an Israeli audience last November. "The NSO Group in today's world, based on the evidence we have, they are the worst of the worst in selling these burglary tools that are being actively currently used to violate the human rights of dissidents, opposition figures, and activists," Snowden said. Remembering Jamal Khashoggi, 100 days on Remembering Jamal Khashoggi, 100 days on 18:33 Big threat I witnessed the power of Pegasus two years ago. Mobile security experts at Check Point, one of the world leaders in cyber security, showed me how they could hack a phone with one click, gaining complete access to its microphone, camera, keyboard, and data. They say the malware they used was similar to Pegasus: An apparently innocent message appeared on my phone asking me to update my settings, and that was all they needed to access the phone. Cyber security expert Michael Shaulov launched a cybersecurity startup in 2010, partly in response to what he saw as the potential threat of Pegasus. "Even when [NSO Group sells] the software to specifically the law enforcement agency that specifically bought it, in the case that those guys want to go after what we call illegitimate targets, NSO has no control [over it]," he says. "They cannot really prevent it." NSO Group says it can monitor the usage of all of its software by all of its clients, but would need to actively check how clients were using their products before becoming aware of any possible misuse. The company's technology takes advantage of what is known as "zero days" -- hidden vulnerabilities in operating systems and apps that grant elite hackers access to the inner workings of the phone. The term is derived from the fact that software developers have had no time to fix them. Companies like NSO have teams of researchers continuously reverse-engineering Apple and Android operating systems to find bugs in the code they can then exploit, Shaulov says, describing the process of finding zero days as an "art" in the largely black and white world of cyber security. NSO Group's singular focus on mobile devices has made them the "alpha dog" in the market, Shaulov says. Finding a zero day can take anywhere from a few months to more than a year, and there is little guarantee of its long-term effectiveness. But if the weakness isn't fixed, it can be exploited repeatedly to hack phones. Software developers such as Apple and Google have teams devoted to finding and fixing vulnerabilities, but it's no easier for them than it is for hackers to find the weak link. In addition, developers' priorities may lie elsewhere, so even known bugs remain unfixed. "Unless Apple or Google fixes that bug, that vulnerability ... can stay for many, many years and NSO can continuously sell software that can go through those bugs in the software and infect those phones," says Shaulov. Researchers at the Toronto-based Citizen Lab have tracked the use of NSO Group's Pegasus software to 45 countries where operators "may be conducting surveillance operations," including at least 10 Pegasus operators who "appear to be actively engaged in cross-border surveillance." New York (CNN Business)Shortly after they were married, MacKenzie Bezos drove her husband, Jeff, across the country from New York to Seattle while he typed out a business plan for what would become Amazon. Now, twenty-five years later, MacKenzie Bezos could once again find herself in the driver's seat, this time with the potential to rattle her husband's control over the world's most valuable company. The world's richest couple announced in a joint statement Wednesday that they are getting a divorce "after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation." The divorce could drastically reduce Jeff Bezos' stake in Amazon and open the door for his wife to become one of its largest shareholders, with new leverage at the company, according to divorce lawyers and corporate governance experts. Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos are getting divorced after 25 years of marriage Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos are getting divorced after 25 years of marriage Washington, where the family lives and Amazon is based, is a community property state, which means assets accrued during the marriage must be split equally in a divorce. Given that Amazon launched after the pair were married, this rule would likely apply to virtually all of Jeff Bezos' current $137 billion net worth, experts say. It is not known whether the couple has a pre- or post-nuptial agreement. It's also unclear whether they might file for divorce in a different state. They own properties in California, Texas and Washington D.C., among other locations. Assuming there is no prior agreement in place, the Amazon CEO may need to either sell off or transfer half of his more than 16% stake in the company to fulfill an equal split for the divorce, lawyers say. MacKenzie Bezos could then try to use her large stake in Amazon to push for changes at the company, potentially in opposition to her ex-husband. But it's unlikely this would lead to actual corporate change. "It's only 8% of the stock," said Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush, "...not enough to actually exert any control." "Jeff remains focused on and engaged in all aspects of Amazon," Drew Herdener, vice president of corporate communications, said in a statement provided to CNN. Unlike other tech CEOs, including Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Snap's Evan Spiegel, Jeff Bezos' control over Amazon doesn't come from having a majority of voting power at the company, but rather from a strong leadership track record over two decades. That probably wouldn't change with a reduced stake. Indeed, his Amazon stake has been declining for years as he sells stock to fund his rocket company, Blue Origin. Instead, it's more likely that any tension between what would be Amazon's two largest individual shareholders would simply "add potential drama to a situation where you may not want drama," said Charles Elson, a professor of corporate governance at the University of Delaware. But that assumes MacKenzie Bezos is looking for a fight. Hirsch told CNN that MacKenzie Bezos' legal counsel will almost certainly advise her that attempting to exercise control at Amazon not only risks creating a public spectacle, but also could undermine the value of her own holdings by interfering with business operations. "My guess is there are going to be opportunities during negotiations that may allow MacKenzie to receive even more than the public is anticipating in terms of assets in return for her complete cooperation," Hirsch says. After Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos released their statement, The New York Post and The National Enquirer reported that Jeff Bezos had begun seeing another woman. The tabloid stories, which CNN has not independently confirmed, do raise the prospect of a messier divorce than initially expected. "If they can somehow resolve this amicably after yesterday, they'll both walk away some of the wealthiest people in the world and it'll be fine," said Peter Walzer, founding partner at Walzer Melcher in California and president of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. But, he added, "in our business, when there's some kind of emotional issues involved and other people, it fuels a lot of fighting, attorney's fees and a waste of a lot of money. BookBub 1 Broadway 14th floor Cambridge, MA 02142 United States Unsubscribe | Update Preferences Cairo (CNN)"Yes, we can!" an Egyptian friend bellowed over the phone to me after hearing Barack Obama's June 2009 speech in Cairo. I was here, in the Egyptian capital, to cover that speech. Almost ten years later I returned to cover another "keynote" speech by an American official -- this time, by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. In the intervening ten years, Egypt has come full circle. In 2011, a popular revolt ended the nearly 30-year-old sclerotic regime of Hosni Mubarak, followed by the country's first and only democratic presidential election in Egypt's 5000-year history. Then, a military coup and a bloody crackdown ensued. As many old friends and human rights organizations attest, the Egyptian state is far more oppressive than it was ten years ago. When Pompeo delivered his address, "The United States: A Force for Good in the Middle East," on Thursday, he did so in a country where skepticism has replaced optimism when it comes to US officials bearing rhetorical gifts. "I don't believe them anymore," veteran political commentator Hisham Kassem told me after listening to Pompeo's speech. "(He) started off by bad mouthing Obama for his policies. It was bad enough for Obama to come here and bad mouth the Bush administration, but this is too much. Every administration comes here to bash the previous one," Kassem said. "It's not statesmanship," he added. While Obama did not specifically name Bush in his 2009 remarks, he made a clear distinction between his vision and that of his predecessor's. Pompeo rebukes Obama and takes on Iran in Cairo speech Pompeo rebukes Obama and takes on Iran in Cairo speech Pompeo used his platform to blast Obama for saying "the United States and the Muslim World needed a 'new beginning'" following eight years of George W. Bush's administration and its wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Pompeo promised that "the age of self-inflicted American shame is over, and so are the policies that produced so much needless suffering." Now, said Pompeo, "comes the real 'new beginning.'" But where is the "new?" If anything, Pompeo's speech suggests that the US -- like Egypt -- has also gone full circle, returning to the days when loyalty and stability (and now the commitment to the "war on terror") trump all else. Glaringly absent in his 15-page address were references to the dismal state of human rights in the region, where the vast majority of people live under corrupt, authoritarian regimes. It's worth pointing out that many of those regimes are close allies of the United States. That omission caught the eye of commentator Wael Eskandar. "In the name of fighting terrorism, he's supporting the despotic leaders of the region. His message is clear: the US will intervene to serve its myopic interests and all countries in the region have to fall in line," Eskandar told me. The government of Egypt, led by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Trump administration's anti-terror rhetoric, so much so that Kassem quipped, "they're turning this country into the 'Egyptian Arab Republic for Countering Terrorism.'" Side by side with the war on terror in the speech was the challenge of containing Iran's influence in the region. Pompeo mentioned Iran more than 25 times. Iran is a long way away from Egypt, which has enough troublesome neighbors -- including Hamas-run Gaza and chaotic Libya -- to occupy its attention. While not condoning Iran's record, Cairo analyst Timothy Kaldas rejects the notion that Iran has a monopoly on evil, while America's allies are all goodness and light. Saudi Arabia, he says, "has also ravaged Yemen, creating what the UN describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis where the population struggles with a cholera outbreak and food shortages that are leading to widespread starvation." Confusion reigns over America's impending Syria pullout Confusion reigns over America's impending Syria pullout Eskandar bluntly summarized his thoughts on the speech, saying: "Today it felt that the US is bent on empowering tyrants in pursuit of its animosity towards Iran, no matter what the cost. Sadly, the cost we pay here is US sanctioned injustice and loss of our freedom." When I listened to Obama's speech, I, like many others here, nodded my head and agreed the Middle East needs a new beginning.
